Director’s Statement

When the lights go down and the images hit the movie screen, anything is possible. Film is a special medium that expands horizons, transcends what divides us, and creates share connections amongst us.

Welcome to the 2010 Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival presented by HBO; a showcase of some of the best new work by and about Asian Americans. This year we’re proud to present a lineup of culturally significant and captivating films, including our documentaries that deal with themes of revolution, family, and new worlds, to our narrative features about love, sex, and coming of age. Additionally, we’ll be running two special free live events, including our Perspectives on Asian American Identity panel and our Conversation with Greg Pak, Marvel writer & award-winning filmmaker, who will be receiving our PAAFF Emerging Voice Award.

We’re excited to continue our relationships with many of our sponsors, including our Founding and Presenting Sponsor, HBO and our returning Premier Sponsor, Comcast, both of whom we had the pleasure of sourcing content for during Asian Heritage Month in May.

Once again, we’ll be screening our films at two fine venues in Philadelphia: the Asian Arts Initiative in Chinatown and the Ibrahim Theater at the International House. We’re also thrilled to be screening our Shorts Program 1: Blood Ties at the Comcast Center.

Welcome and enjoy the festival!
